10" × 11" | Oil Pastel on Paper | Original Artwork
A woman looks directly outward while holding a gesture of silence at her lips in The Cost of Keeping the Peace. Her face is constructed from vivid planes of turquoise, green, violet, rose and blue, yet the boldness of the colour stands in tension with everything she has refused to express.
She has learned to conceal her lived experience so that those around her can remain comfortable in theirs. Anger and resentment accumulate behind the composed surface, but fear of abandonment keeps the truth contained. She preserves her family, her friendships and the appearance of peace by withholding the parts of herself that might disturb them.
The irony is that those closest to her no longer know who she is. More painfully, after years of reshaping herself around the needs of others, she has begun to forget who she is as well.
The Cost of Keeping the Peace considers silence not as absence, but as an active and exhausting form of self-erasure.

What She Keeps
8” × 8 “ In. | Acrylic and Oil Pastel on Paper | Original Artwork
A solitary figure meets the viewer’s gaze in What She Keeps. Her still expression and composed posture are set against a deeply worked field of green, black and muted gold, while unexpected passages of turquoise, violet and coral move across her face and clothing.
The portrait offers presence without explanation. Subtle divisions of colour suggest an inner complexity, but the figure remains self-possessed—visible, yet not entirely revealed. Her direct gaze creates an encounter in which looking does not necessarily grant understanding.
What She Keeps considers the distance that can remain between seeing another person and truly knowing them.

The Price of Fame is part of Mark Bevan’s Modern Cubism collection. This Piece exposes the paradox of getting the life you once dreamed of and discovering what it cost. She is beautiful, successful and carefully composed. She has learned how to present the life expected of her. Almost everything can maintain the illusion. Her eyes cannot.
