Hard Rain
8.5" × 10.5" | Oil Pastel on Canvas Paper | Original Artwork
Across a sunlit field, an immense sky gathers in Hard Rain. The warmth of summer remains in the land, but above it, blue-grey, violet and muted rose accumulate around a pale, unsettled centre.
The painting captures a pattern familiar across Alberta: the moment when the sun remains behind us while something darker approaches from the northwest. Hail and thunder have not yet arrived, but the atmosphere has already changed. We recognize the warning and hurry toward shelter, rarely pausing to notice the strange beauty carried within it.
That suspended moment also becomes a metaphor for anxiety—the certainty of danger before anything has actually happened. Reassurance may come from elsewhere, but the body has already read the sky.
Hard Rain remains at that threshold: the field illuminated, the storm approaching, and beauty inseparable from apprehension.

A mature tree rises beyond a pond filled with shifting greens, yellows and quiet traces of violet in Where Stillness Gathers. Reeds interrupt the foreground while reflections soften the distinction between water, land and sky.
The painting grew from a moment at the University of Alberta Botanic Garden, formerly known as the Devonian Botanic Garden. Those familiar with the garden may recognize the setting, but the work holds something more personal than a record of place.
Here, stillness exists both within the landscape and within the person observing it. Colour and reflection carry the experience of a moment in which the external world and an internal sense of calm briefly came into alignment.

What the Sky Carries
9” × 11” In. | Oil Pastel and Acrylic on Canvas Board | Original Artwork
A narrow band of prairie rests beneath an expansive, shifting sky in What the Sky Carries. Turquoise and pale violet gather near the horizon, while layered clouds move through deep blue above, giving the small painting an unexpected sense of scale.
Within the clouds, forms seem to gather without becoming fully defined. They hover between weather and presence—something glimpsed, imagined or remembered, held briefly before the sky changes again.
What the Sky Carries reflects the way the familiar world can sometimes feel charged with something just beyond recognition. Rather than resolving that uncertainty, the painting leaves space for the viewer to discover what, if anything, the sky is carrying.

A suggestion of a forest: slender gold forms emerge through layers of deep blue, violet, turquoise and red. Some appear clearly defined; others dissolve into the surrounding colour and texture. But the painting does not remain still. Its layered surface responds to light and the viewer's movement. Colours deepen and recede, fragments emerge, and the gold catches differently as the angle of encounter changes. What appears from one position may become less certain from another. The trees provide a structure, but much of the painting exists in the spaces between them—in glimpses of colour, obscured forms, and the suggestion that something more is present than can be taken in at once. What Remains Between invites a slower kind of looking. Not everything reveals itself immediately (including people). Some things become visible only when we change where we stand.

The Distance Between exposes the enormous space that exists between two places, and how small that distance can sometimes feel. The prairie stretches toward a horizon that seems impossibly far away, beneath a sky that takes up almost everything. No figure, building or road to tell you where to look. Just land, sky and distance. Stand beneath an Alberta sky and realize that emptiness isn't really empty. The weather is moving. The grasses are shifting. Light is changing across the horizon. We are there, quietly witnessing it all. Perhaps the distance in the painting isn't something to cross. Perhaps it is simply the space that allows us to stop, look, and become aware of where we are. Life is like that.

There are moments on the prairie when the world seems to ask absolutely nothing of us: Nothing Needed is about one of those moments. A wide blue sky settles over a low, quiet horizon. The land is reduced to bands of green, softened by distance and atmosphere. No farmhouse, no road, no figure and no destination. Nothing has been added to tell you what to see or where to look. The painting is simply an invitation to stand still for a moment—to experience the openness of the prairie and the peculiar comfort of realizing that, right here and right now, nothing needs to happen. Nothing to accomplish. Nothing to fix. Nothing Needed.

Just West of Here comes from my love of the Alberta landscape and those ordinary places that become extraordinary when we stop long enough to notice them.
A weathered building sits quietly beneath an enormous prairie sky, surrounded by fields stretching toward the horizon. Nothing remarkable is happening. The flowers grow, the clouds move, the old building stands. And somehow, that is enough.
I wanted the building to feel almost like another presence in the landscape—small beneath the sky, carrying its history; quietly, witnessing season after season as the world changes around it.
This is the Alberta I know: open, weathered, beautiful and immense.
It’s also, possibly, a reflection of the viewer’s lived experience.

A storm gathers over a brilliant Alberta canola field, the weight of the sky held against the intensity of the land below. Before It Comes lives in that suspended moment when you know something is approaching, but it has not yet arrived.
The landscape becomes less about a particular place than the experience of standing within it — watching the weather change, feeling the air shift, and becoming aware of your own presence in the vastness.
Part of Mark Bevan's exploration of Presence Witnessing Presence, the painting asks us not simply to look at the landscape, but to notice what happens when we become still enough to feel ourselves within it.

Part of Mark Bevan's exploration of Presence Witnessing Presence, Here is the simple act of noticing where we are. The landscape does not ask us to go anywhere or search for something beyond the horizon. There is no destination. Nothing needs to happen. For a moment, this place—and our presence within it—is enough. I am drawn to landscapes that create that kind of pause. A change in light, the movement of weather, the meeting of land and sky—ordinary things that become something more when we give them our attention. Here is being present for that moment. Not where we have been, or where we are going. Just here.
